While CMS and private insurers along with many physician practices are pushing for additional telehealth services, there is major increase in telehealth fraud. Right now, the federal government estimates that there were $4.5 billion worth of telehealth-related fraud losses in fiscal year 2020, the largest of any category and a record for Medicare fraud. More than 80% of the Department of Justice’s fraud recoveries in 2020 were health care-related, the largest number of government-initiated cases against health entities ever reported. Recent Medicare audits revealed that over 50% of professional telehealth distant-site claims that Medicare paid were wrong, costing millions in overpay-ments. This can be a valuable audit for QM or claims.
