The treating provider who performs the “substantiative portion” of a split/shared visit bills for the visit. All split/shared visits represent visits in a facility setting, including skilled nursing facilities, and emergency departments. Split/shared visits can be billed for initial and subsequent visits includ-ing critical care services. Split/shared visits can also be billed for prolonged services that have a typical time in the CPT® descriptor.
